Colored 04.11.08

Dorwing by ~blackened-white

See his colored version in this [link]

It's got a grand story to go with it. XD

Also made my title to go with his...naming of the colors in the piece...with one color as a fruit. Hehe.

The girl in my version...she has no story.
None of impassioned love or devotion.
None of desire for great things in life.
None of dynamic chords and vibrant melodies.
None of spontaneous brush strokes and broken mirrors.
None of tragic death by falling pandas.

"Just fuck off and leave me alone."

Uninteresting and uninterested

I’ve had an extended hiatus from the blogging world.
And I failed to write my 2007 entry for my yearly recapitulations…

Much has happened to me in the course of the year that has passed, and looking back, I feel a bit strange…about how so much has happened in that period of time, and at the same time, how it also seems how nothing has happened at all.

I’ve experienced so many new things…”work”-wise with my internship at an ad agency (though I really was a useless intern who basically had no knowledge) and putting up my own little business with a friend, making laptop sleeves - (www.punchdrunkpanda.multiply.com) - then there was my 5 month language course in Shanghai, which I suppose should score several points in the life experience scoreboard… and then there was love, or something like it.

I feel this mélange of experiences should have spurred significant growth, in every aspect of my being…
But somehow, I feel stagnant.
I feel like the same person from the year before… cynical, untalented, unskilled, unmotivated, lazy, easily discouraged, lost, uninteresting and uninterested.

Perhaps I’m not even stagnant… perhaps I am the worse… degenerating, regressing.
Gah.
Suddenly so emo.

I’ve spent all this time delaying the so-called “real life” of zombie work, and up to now, I have yet to choose my poison, or my sustenance… and that in itself is poisoning me.

I was the first to graduate among my kabarkadas, and yet I am the only one who is still jobless. Not that I envy my friends’ jobs because it is pretty safe to say that they seem unhappy, nor am I interested in what they do… but at least it seems they know more about what they want in life.

I’ve been asking myself for years, time and time again, what do I want to do with my life? And I can never get an answer. Or maybe never one that is feasible or acceptable.
Good grief.
Gah.

I really want to get my head shaved...I feel it would be...cleansing. I've been wanting that since high school or early college maybe, but I was preoccupied with growing my hair long after a life of short hair. Hair passed my chin was considered long (by myself and my mother) before my college days.
I'll be leaving for China in September, stay there for five months, and have my hair get even longer. When I get back, I'll probably savor my long hair just a little longer, and then have my head shaved before summer. Maybe donate my hair, if there is such a foundation that concerns itself with wigs for cancer patients (a la Locks of Love sa Queer Eye, haha). So about 8 months from now, I will have great ease in shampooing my hair, and most likely take a fraction of the time that I used to take in taking a showering. Yes, taking a showering.
And I am writing this so that:
a) You people won't be shocked once you see me with my head shaved
and
b) So that I have this public "contract" with myself so I don't chicken out at the last minute and back out of shaving my head
and
c) By announcing that I've been wanting to get my head shaved since high school, I shan't be teased that I did it because of Britney. Although I feel it will be inevitable that some people bring that up, especially old, traditional folks who deem it "deviant" that a woman should want to have a shaved head

Yey.
No need for pleasantries.
Lagay din kaya ako ng higanteng tattoo (na yung tipong binabasa lang para i-apply sa balat, o kung anumang maaaring pumasa bilang tattoo pero panandalian lamang)... para lang mawindang ang nanay ko.

April 19, 2007

I love being a tourist in my own country. :)

Faye and I first went around Luneta Park and went into the Orchidarium because our first stop, the National Museum opens at 10 a.m. and we arrived at 9:30 a.m. After the orchidarium, which was more like a garden rather than an "orchidarium" (although in fairness, ang ganda ng fountain nila. Pictures at http://horn13.multiply.com/photos/album/58), we then proceeded to the huge National Museum, which houses five floors of Philippine art and history, from paintings, to pottery, to photographs and more.

We then went to the Cultural Center of the Philippines and viewed an exhibit featuring works of artists painted on a palette. Ingenious! :)

From CCP, the next stop was the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, which houses contemporary artwork as well as gold jewelry and pottery that are evidence of civilization in the Philippines prior to the arrival of the Spaniards.

After the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, we headed to our final museum, and the ONLY museum, which allowed us to take pictures (again, see http://horn13.multiply.com/photos/album/58)…Museo Pambata! Fun, fun, fun!! I love all the things/exhibits visitors can play around with and take great pictures with!! Haha! Kids at heart kami ni Faye! I love it. :)

As if those four museums were not enough, we headed to PICC for the Manila F.A.M.E. International’s jewelry and home décor exhibits. By invitation only :P at nakapasok pa rin ang mga yagit. Haha. All the exhibitors were testaments of Filipino creativity. They make me so proud to be Pinoy. :) Mukhang imported? Hindi! Mukhang gawang Pinoy! World class! :D

We started our day at 8:15 a.m. and got back to my house at around 7 p.m., subsisting only on meaty chicken sandwiches, popcorn and breadsticks we brought along. Hehe. Such a full day, but we ended up spending only 190php on orchidarium and museum entrance fees (20php for the orchidarium that day, 30php student rate – hehe – for the National Museum, 80php for the Met and 60php for the delightful Museo Pambata), plus the 65php I spent on a pair of earrings at F.A.M.E. XD Not too shabby!

Museum hopping allowed us to get to know more about the Philippines and appreciate what ingenious artisans our country has given birth to. Perfect for cheap dates!! Haha! :)

I am the emerald earth
That cradles life in the tender leaves of my resilient branches.

I am the golden sun
That radiates luminous warmth and blazes with fiery passion.

I am the lavender breeze
That dances gracefully, freely, and soothes with a gentle touch.

I am the sapphire sea

That holds silent strength flowing beneath its serene waters.

I am the harmony of nature’s rainbow hues

That revels shamelessly in melodic moments of bliss.

I am the phenomenon unparalleled
And this is my womanly essence.
    This is my consummate soul.

Enjoy, be Pinoy; bahala na si Batman

By Gilda Cordero-Fernando

MANILA, Philippines -- Pinoy is what Filipinos call each other, a term of endearment. You’re Pinoy from Pilipino just like you’re tisoy from mestizo or chinoy from chino.

It’s a nickname just as Minoy is from Maximo, Ninoy from Benigno, Tinay from Florentina and Kikay from Francisca. But now they’re Maxi and Ben and Tintin and Cheska.

You’ve been called indio, goo-goo, Negro, flip, noypits. Or Filipino, a biscuit that is brown outside and white inside, or a word stricken from the dictionary which means domestic. Ay, lintik!

You’re Juan de la Cruz or Mang Pandoy. You’re common tao, masa, urban poor but also Cecile Licad and Don Jaime, Jose Rizal and Tony Meloto, Shawie and Pacquiao and Nick Joaquin, galing galing.

Born June 12, 1896, the Republic of the RP is a Gemini, good at connecting, good at loving-loving, good at texting and interpersonal skills.

Filipinos like to yakap, akbay, hawak, kalong, kalabit. We sleep side by side, siping-siping, we go out kabit kabit.

There’s lots of us to go around. Someone always to listen to a sob story, even in a jeepney, to share-a-load or to share a TV.

Everyone’s tito, tita

Who has a hipag, a bayaw, a bilas, a balae, a kinakapatid? Who has an ate, dete, diche, kuya, diko? The maids call her ate, the driver calls him kuya and everybody is tito or tita.

Who has a Lola Baby, a Tito Totoy, a bosing called Sir Peewee, his wife Ma’am Lovely and their kids Cla Cla and Cring Cring?

The Pinoy lives in a condo, a mansion, an apartment, a bahay na bato, ilalim ng tulay, Luneta, Forbes Park, and Paris too!

He’s a citizen of the world, he’s in all the villages and capitals, colonizing the West, bringing his guitar and his bagoong, his walis na tingting, his tabo, his lolo and lola.

Where there’s a beat, there’s a Pinoy. You’ll find her singing in a nightclub in Tokyo, a musical in London, the Opera House in Sydney. Sure, they’ve got the infrastructure, the theaters and architecture. Who but Pinoys direct their plays, or trains their company managers, and imports our teachers, by the way?

Viagra to Victoria’s Secret

Look at that baggage—all pasalubong, none for herself. From bedsheet to hair color, Toblerone to carpet, Viagra to paella pan, Victoria’s Secret to microwave.

Hey, Joe, don’t envy me ’cause I’m brown, you’ll get ultra violet from that sun and turn red not brown.

Just lucky, I guess. God put us all in the oven, but some were uncooked and some were burned, but me, I came out golden brown!

Hey, Kristoff! Hey David and Ann! Your Pinoy yaya makes your kids gentler, more obedient, she teaches them how to pray. Hey Big Brother! Hey Grandma Moses! Who but Pinoy nurses make your sick days easier all the way?

We made the jeepney, the karaoke, the fluorescent bulb, the moon buggy. We invented People Power and crispy pata; popularized virgin coconut oil, scaled the Everest and made it with Cebu furniture abroad among the best. Ever trying for the Guinness World Record—with the longest swim of a child, the longest kiss, the longest longanisa…

Linguist

The Pinoy is a linguist. As in. As if. For a while. Open the light. Close the light. Paki ganyan naman ang kuwan sa ano. Tuck in. Tuck out. Don’t be high blood. If you’re ready na, I’ll pass for you.

Hayop; Hanep! Bongga ka ’day, feel na feel kita, kilig to the bones ako. Don’t make wala, don’t make tampo. Taralets na, babes, let’s go, nababato na ang syota mo.

I’m inviting you to my party, please RSVP. Oo means “yes” or “maybe,” or “yes if you insist,” or “maybe if it doesn’t rain.”

“Yes” is also a nice way of saying “no.” Yes, hindi kita sisiputin. “No,” eto na ako at ang barkada ko. Please don’t ask a Pinoy a question like that!

Just flows

She’s not so exact, not so chop-chop, she just flows and flows. Filipino time? Naku, huli din naman ang Kano!

The Pinoy finds time to be nice, to be kind, to apologize, to be there when you’re depressed, to help you with your utang and your wedding dress.

The Filipino is a giver, never mind what it does to his liver, never mind what it takes. Hardships of the Third World don’t dry up his blood, they just make him more compassionate, more feeling, of the other guy’s lot.

Note that the maid sends all her wages home to ailing daddy. She is the OCW whose labor of loneliness created the original katas ng Saudi.

‘Bahala na’

The Filipino is fearless, bahala na si Batman, which actually means Bathala na or “leave all to God.” Okay lang if I die by bitay, okay lang if I live, okay lang if I survive by the skin of my teeth.

Saway ni Inay: Di ka naman Bill Gates, di ka naman French, mahirap nang magbuhat ng sarili mong bench.

Be Pinoy! Enjoy!

The Good Body

drama, emo
I just watched "The Good Body" at the Music Museum with Dodge last night.

Interesting and insightful. Hilarious yet poignant. It's a pity that I never got to catch Eve Ensler's first play, The Vagina Monologues. Anyway, The Good Body covered an array of topics related to the female body, similar to the themes of the Vagina Monologues, I would imagine. From women's unending (because it is also impossible) quest for the perfect body to exploitation, molestation and abuse of the female body, from overly botoxed, cut, nipped, tucked, sucked, stretched women to extreme "fitness" buffs who exercise 4 days non-stop, from never believing your lover when he says he loves you even when you think you're "fat" to seeking acceptance from critical parents, particularly figure-conscious mothers.

I was telling Dodge after the play last night, the obsession with the body, a "beautiful" body, is a vicious cycle. One would think that our mothers, having gone through the pain of trying to stay thin and pretty, trying to fit into the impossible mold their own mothers have created for them, would no longer wish for their daughters to have to go through the same excruciating suffering and crushing self-doubt. One would think that they would leave their daughters be, that they would allow them to eat cake or chocolates everyday, as long as it was done in moderation and not sacrificing their health. But no, it's as if they wish for their daughters to undergo the same torture that they went through. They do not do this intentionally. Being immersed in this world, this society, where concern for one's physical appearance seems to grow exponentially with each passing fall collection, they may be merely looking out for their daughters. They don't want their children to be made fun of. No one wants their daughter to be called "ugly", "fat" or "acne-faced"...unless they make up for it with brains. Lots of it. After all, an "ugly" woman must have remarkable wits, at least twice as smart as the average person, for her life to be of equal importance as that of a dumb, pretty girl. Good grief.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Women are insecure by nature, I think. Unless they were raised in an incredibly flawless, supportive and accepting environment, women rarely believe they are pretty enough, thin enough or good enough for anything. There is ALWAYS something wrong with them. There is always something that is imperfect. Though they know that "Nobody's perfect", they have this idea of perfection which they strive for but can never seem to get close to. And they can never believe any man, anyone, can love them as they are, because they do not even love themselves. Perhaps that is why they say fat girls swallow.

Note to self: Buy Eve Ensler's book "Insecure At Last: Losing It In Our Security-Obsessed World"

Pwet! Nagtetest pa rin ako!!

You Should Be A Poet

You craft words well, in creative and unexpected ways.
And you have a great talent for evoking beautiful imagery...
Or describing the most intense heartbreak ever.
You're already naturally a poet, even if you've never written a poem.

You Are Sunrise

You enjoy living a slow, fulfilling life. You enjoy living every moment, no matter how ordinary.
You are a person of reflection and meditation. You start and end every day by looking inward.
Caring and giving, you enjoy making people happy. You're often cooking for friends or buying them gifts.
All in all, you know how to love life for what it is - not for how it should be.
